Beech Island community mourns death of barber with vigil outside his barbershop

Posted: Updated:

Relatives and dozens of Beech Island community members gathered today in front of Island Cuts Barbershop to remember Zann Worrell.

"I was totally surprised and very happy that everybody came out because I know Zannie, he was a loved person, I could tell everybody loved him," said Juanita Worrell, Zann Worrell's mother.

"He will truly be missed," said Jerusha Hudson, Zann's aunt. "We are a close knit family and when one's missing it really puts a whole in the family but tomorrow is a new day and we will mend."

Just yesterday, the area outside the barbershop was a completely difference scene. Both Richmond County and Aiken County deputies responded to a call Saturday afternoon.

Worrell, 32, was shot while working at the barbershop Sandy Ferry Road. Many in the community said they were shocked to learn this.

"You see it in the CSRA, all around you, but this is home," said Alvin Greenwood, Sr., who lives in Beech Island. "It lets you know it can happen in your neighborhood as it happens in other neighborhoods."

Those who attended the vigil say they want people to remember the caring person Worrell.

"He never had problems with anyone," said James Cannon, a friend of Worrell. He was fun to work with, he taught me a lot and every time you see him he had the brightest smile on his face."

Worrell's mother said it will be difficult not seeing his face each day but the vigil has helped to start the healing process.

"It's going to be very hard but one day at a time - yes, one day at a time," said Ms. Worrell.

Deputies say Worrell died from multiple gunshot wounds after two gunmen attempted to rob the barbershop.

Deputies say the two suspects then fled the scene in a white Honda. A witness followed them into Richmond County and told officers where they were.

Demarcus Booker, 21, and Raphael Wooden, 18, are now in custody in the Richmond County Jail.

Aiken County Investigators say they have warrants for murder and armed robbery for the men, pending their extradition to South Carolina.
