PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 26-year-old volunteer dance teacher was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a student for more than a year.

David Trujillo, who was a volunteer dance teacher at Mountain Pointe High School in Ahwatukee, faces 15 counts of suspected sexual conduct with a minor and three counts of sexual abuse in connection with the relationship, said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

The relationship reportedly began at a hotel when the Mountain Pointe student was 16 years-old and lasted until April of 2012 when the student was 18, according to court documents.

One student who knows both parties and asked to remain anonymous said, "It wasn't surprising to hear. But, it was shocking to hear that it had gone this far. I mean, obviously, it's something we all know is wrong."

The parents of the former student contacted the high school staff May 15 after their son told them about the relationship, Thompson said. The former student originally denied the relationship to police when asked in April 2012.

Police said Trujillo admitted during a recorded telephone conversation with the victim to the relationship and knowing the victim was a minor, the documents stated.

Linda Littell, a spokesperson for the Tempe Union High School district, said Trujillo worked with students at Mountain from March of 2009 until the fall of 2012.

She said he was also a guest choreographer at Desert Vista High School during the 2011-2012 school year.

Littell told CBS 5 news that Trujillo passed two background checks.

"We tell parents that you know, you're sending your children to school and we're responsible for their safety," she said. "So it angers us that this could happen."

Trujillo also worked as dance instructor at Dance Studio 111 in Ahwatukee.

The studio said he's been placed on leave and issued the following statement: "Dance Studio 111 has no prior knowledge of the facts and circumstances underlying the information released in the press today. More specifically, there have not been any reported incidents of sexual misconduct between Mr. Trujillo and any student of Studio 111."

Anyone with information about the crimes is encouraged to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602- 262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377) or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.
