MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A Mesa couple received a rude awakening, literally, when a stolen pickup truck crashed through a bedroom wall of their home early Thursday morning and the driver raced through their house.
A Mesa police spokesman said the driver climbed through the windshield and ran to the house, where one of the homeowners tried to stop him. The suspect pushed his way past the homeowner, who recently underwent surgery, and escaped over a back fence.
Police combed the neighborhood for the suspect and found him near Brown Road and Mesa Drive. He was identified as Rogerio Trevino.
His girlfriend, Veronica Gallegos, was found inside the house hiding in a closet. She had been in the truck at the time of the accident, police said.
The crash was just part of a series of incidents, Mesa police Lt. Ed Wessing said.
Mesa police were investigating a burglary from an auto repair shop about 3 a.m. near Stapley and McKellips roads, where the pickup was stolen, Wessing said.
The business owner said the suspect stole the truck and other items from his business, but then saw the truck drive by as he was talking with the officer nearly two hours later.
Police immediately gave chase, following it into the neighborhood near Horne and McKellips, where they came upon the truck in the side of the home.
Homeowner Laura Simpson and her unidentified husband were sleeping in a bedroom on the opposite side of the house when the crash occurred. She said she heard voices and saw a policewoman outside her home, but said she was still in shock.
"Really? Is that a car in my house," Simpson said. "The officer asked if I was OK, but I said, 'I don't know.'"
She said both she and her husband had undergone recent surgeries, and that her husband tried to stop the suspect and hold him near the garage, but he shoved him down and ran out the back of the house and over a fence.
Her husband was treated at the home by Mesa firefighters.
Simpson said she almost slept in the damaged bedroom that night because her husband was restless.
"I would have had to go back for a sixth surgery," Simpson said.
The crash also broke a waterline that flooded a part of the home, Simpson said.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 20s with a thin build, muscular, tattoos and wearing a white tank top and khaki pants.
Wessing said because police were on the scene almost immediately, there was a good chance the suspect was still in the neighborhood.
