Around the World in Cincinnati: Germany

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

It's no secret that Cincinnati has a rich German heritage.  From Oktoberfest, Christkindlmarkt, Bockfest to Maifest, Cincinnatians have been celebrating all things German for years.

Native German Evi Washburn now lives in the tristate, and notices the large German population.

"There are clusters of German people in the states, I've found," said Evi. "We do happen to have a big cluster right here."

Because of the large cluster of Germans here in southwest Ohio, 34 different societies focus on German heritage.  According to their umbrella organization the German-American Citizens League, or GACL.org, each society shares a common bond for German American Heritage and culture.

Evi found her home away from home with The Germania Society, which focuses on establishing true traditional German events like Oktoberfest and Maifest.

She even helps with the planning of events.

"I even have people come up and say this is great because they are from Germany and they didn't think their kids would experience it, and here they come to Cincinn ati and it has such a German feel."

Evi says that's what's most important to her and other native Germans in Cincinnati.  They are able to share and experience traditional German culture in the city, so they can pass it down to the next generation.

"If it weren't for so many German immigrants right here, and wanting their kids and grandkids to experience what their parents and grandparents experienced, I don't think it would be possible."
