French, German ambassadors visit Freedom Center

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Ministers and Deputy Chiefs of Mission from The Embassy of France and The Embassy of Germany visited Cincinnati on Monday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Élysée Treaty, one of the most important European peace treaties of the 20th century.

The French and German representatives spent time at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, enjoying a special photo exhibition illustrating the accomplishments of the friendship and cooperation between France and Germany throughout the 50 years from the time when the peace treaty was signed on January 22, 1963 to the present.

"Upon learning last October about the Élysée Treaty anniversary exhibition, the first thing that hit my mind was to bring the exhibition to Cincinnati to be shown at the Freedom Center," said Martin Wilhelmy, honorary consul of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Élysée Treaty, also called the "Treaty of Friendship," became the basis for the European unification - creating the European Union - showing that in a peaceful environment, political, economical and cultural cooperation can lead to prosperity. The European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.

Cincinnati was selected by the French and German Consulates as a site for the exhibition because of its rich French and German heritage.

The Freedom Center, which houses a piece of the Berlin Wall, also hosted a series of events and festivities as part of a collaboration with the French and German Diplomatic Missions.
