Gov. Deal makes history at Paine College

Posted: Updated:

Paine College held its first commencement ceremony in 131 years where a sitting governor gave the keynote address. Governor Nathan Deal left a mark in the college's history giving the commencement speech for more than 80 Paine College graduates on Sunday.

"This is really a monumental moment," said graduate Bryan Fulton.

The governor was recognized for his record of achievement, leadership and service. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate degree; Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.

However, the governor quickly turned the attention to the most important people in the room, the graduates.

"I want to say to you that I am personally very proud of every one of you and on behalf of the almost ten million Georgians, I want to tell you they are proud of you as well," said Gov. Deal.

This is the second time this week Gov. Deal has been in town. He also gave the commencement speech at GRU's graduation on Friday and his message at both ceremonies for the graduates; do not live in fear.

"The uncertainties of life will always be with us but if we have faith and we have confidence in our abilities, we will generally be able to make the right choices. That's what I wanted to let them know," said Gov. Deal.

"Anytime you have the highest elected official on your campus talking with you, you need to listen," said Brandon Brown, VP of Institutional Advancement at Paine College. "And what he said was, know who you are. "

A message these graduates heard.

"That was very influential, I really listened to what he was saying to me and I really took everything he told me and I'm going to place it in the path that I decide to go," said Fulton.
