Commissioner Mason announces run for Mayor of Augusta-Richmond County

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

UPDATE: Commissioner Alvin Mason had an early Mother's Day surprise for his mom. He announced at his quarterly District 4 breakfast that he will be running for Mayor of Augusta- Richmond County in 2014.

Mason's mother said she had no idea it was coming.

"No I didn't," said Hazel Sturdivant. "I had asked him what he was going to do and he never told me what he was going to do."

Mason has been the commissioner for the last six years and is not eligible to run for re-election and likewise for Mayor Deke Copenhaver.

"We both term limited out of our particular seats at the same time," said Commissioner Mason.

Instead of stepping from local to state government, he decided he wants to continue to focus on Augusta.

"Some want to send me up to the state [government] but I'm not interested in going to the state. I want to be right here to take care of folks," said Commissioner Mason.

"We are tired of the divide, we need to bring Augusta together," said Samuel Walker of Augusta.

A mission that is on the forefront of Commissioner Mason's agenda.

"Well I just want to continue to bring people together and show that we can have differences but we have more in common than we have different," said Commissioner Mason.

An announcement he thought was appropriate for Mother's Day.

"Mothers are the very backbone and the essence of our community and there are so many in the community that have single mother homes," said Commissioner Mason. "So the mothers are at the very forefront of rearing our children and giving them the morals and values that they need."

Qualities he said he appreciates about his own mother and wanted to do it on this weekend to give something back to her and the community.
