Emergency response training takes place at Mossy Creek Elementary School

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WFXG) -

At first glace, it seems like law enforcement are dodging bullets from a school shooter; they're actually just practicing in case that scenario becomes reality.

"We think it's important that all our officers receive this training," said Lt. Tim Thornton. "Because, unfortunately, at any time, these incidents can take place."

Thornton, with North Augusta's Public Safety office, says this training is critical for officers who don't typically work this beat.

"Most of this training we typically set aside for our SWAT team," he said. "In this particular case, we're working strictly with our frontline road officers and the first responders."

The training is provided in association with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and several other agencies. There hasn't been any specific threat to North Augusta schools, but Lt. Thornton says you can never be too proactive.

"Law enforcement in general wants to do what we can to prepare for those. We hope it never happens, obviously, but in the event that it does, this training will help us to be better prepared," said Thornton.

The hope now is that the training will never have to be used.
