Gov. Deal approves multi-million dollar cancer center project

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Governor Nathan Deal approved a multi-million dollar project for the GRU Cancer Center.

More than $57 million will go towards a designation that will make the current cancer facility a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Center, a project that will provide more services, more in-depth research, and a new building.

"It will provide the community with a tremendous amount of resources of education awareness; the ability to educate the public on the importance of early detection," said GRU Cancer Center Director Dr. Samir Khleif "The other thing that would help is economical development, when you build a designated cancer center within a region that helps in increasing the revenues.

The entire project is expected to take about nine years.
