Grandmother charged with murder in toddler's death

A 35-year-old Yuma woman is charged with murder in the shooting death of her 3-year-old grandson.

Rachel Spry originally was accused of manslaughter in the April 29 shooting death of  Darrien Nez. He was shot with Spry's loaded handgun, which she allegedly left in a backpack on a clothes dryer in a room that she saw the boy enter.

The Yuma Sun reports that Spry learned in court Monday that she's now charged with second-degree murder

Spry has responsibility for her grandson's death, but Justice of the Peace Greg Stewart said the manslaughter charge was upgraded because of "extreme indifference to human life."

Stewart denied her request to be released from jail to attend the funeral service.

Spry also is charged with reckless endangerment and weapons and drug crimes.
