PD: Screaming man talks about cats eating him

CBS 5 CBS 5
MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A man who broke into a Mesa apartment and told the tenant that cats were eating him was arrested after injuring one officer during a struggle, officers said.

Charges against Derrick McDonald for trespassing and aggravated assault are pending.

It's not known what provoked McDonald to break in Saturday night, but police said once they put him into handcuffs, he was acting and speaking in a manner consistent with drug use.

McDonald then, according to a police report, "exploded into motion, pushing himself backwards and flailing his arms back and forth."

Officers tried to subdue him, but as McDonald continued to fall, he took officers to the ground with him. One officer was injured when the man fell on his ankle, and he was taken to the hospital.

Officers were still unable to completely restrain him as he continued to struggle and scream.

The Tempe Fire Department responded to the scene at 2107 W. Broadway and chemically subdued him to calm him down.

McDonald was taken to Banner Desert Hospital for treatment of his condition.  At the hospital, the suspect continued in his altered state and again had to be medically subdued by hospital staff, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
