National Preservation Month marked by historic loft tour

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

National Preservation Month takes place every May, and Historic Augusta, Inc, celebrates by inviting patrons on a tour of Downtown Augusta's most unique and charming loft homes.

"People are having such a good time visiting 11 historic sites in our downtown historic district," said Julia Jackson.

Jackson with Historic Augusta says the ninth annual tour is helping hundreds of people downtown to see what it's all about.

"Downtown is a wonderful place to work and play," she said. "And the old buildings give it such rich character."

Folks who went on the tour agree.

"I think it's getting people down here to learn the history of the city they live in," said Pat Dempsey. "And just how life was 50, 60, 70 years ago."

The event chairman is also optimistic the tours will have an economic impact and generate new business downtown.

"A lot of talk that downtown is on the verge and on the cusp of being the great American city center it once was," he said. "Hogwash. We're already there. We're already there. We just need to act like it."

The goal now is to balance the preservation of historic charm with the continued growth of a modern city.
