He was a little boy who loved to run around and play and make new friends.
But 6-year-old Chace Alderete died tragically when a horse trailer tailgate fell on him one month ago. Now his family is talking about their plans to give back to the community in Chace's name.
"Anytime we would go anywhere, anywhere he saw a kid, even when we were driving, he would roll down the windows and say, 'Hey you kid, come over here,'" Chace's dad Anthony Alderete said. "He just wanted to acknowledge them, get to know them."
Anthony Alderete said his son also loved running around Arizona Youth Rough Riders, a family recreation center in Apache Junction where kids can take care of horses and go on trail rides, instead of hanging out on the street. But on March 27, six days after Chace's sixth birthday, the unimaginable happened.
"The accident involved a horse trailer that had fallen on him and crushed him," Anthony Alderete said.
Chace was flown to the hospital, but it was too late. Over the past month, Anthony Alderete and his wife Jamie have been trying to cope with the loss of their beloved son.
"Staying strong for each other and the family, showing there is hope," Anthony Alderete said.
Now they want to build a playground at Rough Riders so small children will have a safe place to play.
"It'll be referred to as 'Chace's Place,' with a sign that says, 'Hey you kid, come over here,'" Anthony Alderete said.
"Our heart goes out to the family and we want to try and help out in any way we can," said Colin Williams with Rural Metro.
Rural Metro crews assisted the day the accident happened. Williams said they will be helping out with a fundraiser this weekend along with Air Evac, to raise money for Chace's Place.
"We hope to build an immaculate playground in memory of him and we hope for a good long life for the playground for many kids to come," Anthony Alderete said.
If you'd like to help, the event will be held at Rough Riders at 1306 N. Meridian Rd. in Apache Junction from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
You can also make a donation to Wells Fargo account number 1096604481, "In Memory of Chace Alderete."
