Metro police said a 13-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being struck by a freight train Tuesday night near Spence Lane and Lebanon Pike.
The boy was walking on a set of tracks adjacent to those on which the freight train was traveling, police said. When the train engineer sounded the train's horn several times, the boy responded by crossing onto the tracks in the train's path.
The boy was found under the train and then transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the incident was a suicide attempt, and the child's parents told police they found him smoking what they believe to be marijuana prior to the incident.
