Kris Thomas' singing talent was a secret for years

(WMC-TV) - Memphis has three voices still in the running to win NBC's hit show "The Voice". One of the contestants kept his talent a secret for years.

Kris Thomas' parents had no idea that he could sing until he was 13 years old when he was picked to sing in front of the congregation at Morning View Baptist Church in Memphis, where his father is a pastor.

Thomas' parents say they were nervous before he started singing, but once the words came out, nervousness was replaced with shock.

Little did they know their son had a voice that would turn into a career.

"Kris and I would sing along to Christmas music. At that time he was about 6 years old, but I didn't know at that time the gift he had," said Thomas' father, Alvin Fleming.

"I was very excited because I can't sing and I love singing," laughed his grandmother, Christine Cleaves.

"For him to be like 12 or 13 and have the pitch and range that he had at that age it was unusual," said Thomas' mother, Sandra Fleming. "Very, very unusual."

Both Kris' parents have a song they hope he will sing during the "knock out rounds" that begin Monday on "The Voice".

His father wants to hear his version of Carrie Underwood's song, "I know you won't". While his mother wants him to sing "You are so beautiful" by Joe Cocker.

The artists do get to select their own songs for this round of the competition.
