Stranded motorist describes rushing Stewart Co. floodwaters

DOVER, TN (WSMV) -

Stewart County officials say damage from flooding over the weekend is among the worst they have seen. Nearly seven inches of rain fell within 48 hours, and many people even had to be rescued from rushing water.

"My truck dropped off right in the water right here," Benjamin Howard said.

Howard said he barely made it out of his truck, and from there it only got worse.

"I saw the headlights under water going around and around," he said. "I was just shaking."

Howard was on his way to rescue his stranded wife. He and his truck made it to her, but not together.

"Then it just sunk," Howard said.

Howard floated about one-quarter mile up the road, and the whole time his truck floated behind him.

"At a point down here, I even had a cow swim by me," Howard said.

Howard finally made it to the bank but couldn't reach his wife, who was stranded on top of her truck 20 feet away and screaming for help.

Three grueling hours later, both her and his wife were rescued, and crews transported them to a hospital.

"I used a lot of muscles I didn't know I had that night," Howard said.

Forty homes were destroyed, and most of them don't have insurance. Volunteers have been collecting water and cleaning supplies to help the flood victims recover, and eventually they plan to collect monetary donations.

Officials say you can send donations to Good Samaritan Ministries and have it earmarked for Stewart County flood relief.
