Operation World Traveler takes off at Augusta Regional Airport

Posted: Updated:

Zora Barnwell, a fourth grader at Lamar-Milledge Elementary, boarded a plane for the first time on Saturday.

"I feel excited," Barnwell said timidly, "because we got to get on a real airplane."

Barnwell and other students from both Lamar-Milledge Elementary and W. S. Hornsby K-8 School received a hands-on demonstration of what it is like to travel at Augusta Regional Airport.

This is the second year Operation: World Traveler has been organized by the Augusta Chapter of the Links Incorporated. The students went through airport security, boarded a plane and went to baggage claim.

"A lot of folks don't think about putting their kids on a plane," said Beverly Tarver, president of the Augusta Chapter of the Links Inc. "For most of them this is the first time they've been inside an airport and certainly the first time they've gotten on the plane," Tarver continued.

While the students didn't actually take flight, members of the Links say programs like these are important to get younger people thinking about traveling.

"Some of them are afraid to get on the plane initially but once they sit down, they have a lot of fun," said Audra Roper, a member of the Links. "They talk about it for weeks afterwards and I let them know that it is something the all can do. It's very tangible for them in their future."
