Augusta's historic bridges to undergo renovations

Posted: Updated:

Richmond County's traffic engineering department are planning to give some of Augusta's historic bridges a make-over. Paid for by T-SPLOST dollars, about $1.6 million dollars is set aside for these beautification projects.

One of the bridges, is the Butt Bridge that crosses over the Augusta Canal on 15th Street. The 99-year-old bridge was dedicated to Archibald Butt, an Augustan who served as an aide to President William Taft, before becoming one of the Titanic victims in 1912.

"We have a lot of these historic bridges," said Steve Cassell, director of traffic engineering in Richmond County. "The maintenance on them is waned over the years, and we want to restore them and bring them back to when they were first built."

The renovations should be complete by next year, when the city rededicates the bridge 100 years after its first ceremony.
