PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix police officer was forced to shoot at a man as he tried to run the officer over after a routine traffic stop early Friday morning.

Two officers pulled the motorist over about 1:30 a.m. near 35th Drive and Oregon Avenue as he pulled into a driveway of a house where he did not live, said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

During questioning the man rolled up his windows and started ramming the officers' and residents' vehicles before attempting to drive away.

He started heading directly for one of the officers, who fired in self-defense. The suspect was not hit, Thompson said

The driver eventually crashed into a truck and another vehicle before slamming into a carport, Thompson said.

He took off on foot and was captured near a church about a block away.

Thompson said alcohol was a factor.

No one was hurt.

No other information was immediately available.
