Ala. Legislature lowers hazardous waste fees

Posted: Updated:

The Alabama Legislature has voted to lower the fees for burying hazardous waste at the Emelle landfill, which proponents say will boost use of the landfill and create jobs in west Alabama.

The Senate voted 25-4 for the bill Thursday. The House passed it 84-8 last month.

The bill now goes to the governor.

Democratic Sen. Bobby Singleton of Greensboro, whose district represents the Emelle landfill, says high fees enacted in 1990 have made the landfill uncompetitive and employment has dropped to about 60 people. He says lower fees will add jobs.

The Legislative Fiscal Office estimates that the lower fees will reduce the state's income by $625,000 annually.

The landfill will have to take in an extra 115,000 tons annually to replace that revenue.
