Lee Co. Board of Education selects new superintendent

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

In a three to four vote at special meeting called Tuesday evening, the Lee County Board of Education selected Dr. James McCoy as the new Superintendent of schools.

"He got the majority vote, he did ask me about that, I told him the entire board will support you and that's what we're going to do," says Napoleon Stinger, President of the Lee County School Board.

Thirty-eight applications for the position were narrowed to five with interviews occurring in March.

"His leadership style stood out. He's tried everything he possibly can to keep people working, keep from laying people off and that really stood out to me. When the majority of us were going through that tough time financial wise... So I really like that," explains Stinger.

McCoy has served as the superintendent for Commerce City Schools in Georgia since 2005 and also served as principal for many school systems in the state.

Stringer called him Tuesday night to make the official offer and McCoy was elated to accept.

"He's going to listen. He's going to asses this system and when he sees something can be improved he's gradually going to do that," says Stinger.

Dr. McCoy will begin in Lee County June 1, 2013.
