San Luis man found guilty of distributing methamphetamine

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

San Luis, AZ, resident Indalecio Castro-Ponce, 40, who used his wife and teenage son to make drug runs, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and two counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine by a federal jury in Phoenix Friday.

During the trial against Castro-Ponce the U.S. Attorney showed evidence of his distribution of  methamphetamine between February and July 2012. Castro-Ponce made more than 20 drug trafficking related trips to different locations throughout the southwest United States. Areas that include Salt Lake City, UT, Las Vegas, NV, Fresno, Sunland, and Moreno Valley, CA, according to the U.S. Attorney.

On the drug-related trips Castro-Ponce would take his wife and teenage son with him to help deflect from the drug activities.

After Castro-Ponce made the methamphetamine drug drop, law enforcement would seize what was distributed. From a Fresno location law enforcement seized more than three pounds of 96 percent pure "ice" methamphetamine and in Moreno Valley they seized more than seven pounds of methamphetamine. From the same two locations law enforcement agents seized more than $200,000 in cash.

A conviction of either charge, conspiracy to possess methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, a $10,000,000 fine or both.

Castro-Ponce's sentencing is set for July 8, 2013. He is being held until his sentencing date.

The investigation in this case was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations in Yuma, Arizona, with assistance from HSI-Fresno, HSI-Riverside County, HSI-Salt Lake City, HSI-Las Vegas, and HSI-Phoenix, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the LA-IMPACT Task Force, the INCA Task Force, and the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. The prosecution was handled by Krissa Lanham and William Bryan, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
