Top Show Low, Ariz.ona cop headed to Burlington, NC

SHOW LOW, AZ (AP) -

The police chief in the Arizona mountain town of Show Low is leaving to take the top police job in Burlington, N.C.

Chief Jeffrey Smythe (Sm-eyeth) says his last day in Show Low is Wednesday and he starts in Burlington on May 1.

Smythe has overseen 32 officers in the town of about 10,000 since 2008. He joined the Show Low force after working for the Scottsdale, Ariz., police for 19 years.

Smythe will oversee 125 officers and 40 civilian employees in Burlington, a town of about 50,000 in central North Carolina.

Smythe won the new job over 52 other applicants following a nationwide search.

He has a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University, a master's degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University and attended the FBI national academy.

    According to investigators, twenty-three-year-old Abbi Nicole Broome was involved in an altercation on the 1900 block of Warren Street in Augusta at around 10:50 a.m. Monday morning. A preliminary investigation found that Broome stabbed another individual at least once in the chest.
