Employees take the day off to volunteer

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Employees from Savannah River Site got a day out of the office but many chose to keep working as part of the United Way support program, SERVE. SRNS employees volunteered at Heritage Academy.

"This is the school that Augusta re-built," said Heritage Academy Executive Director Linda Tucciarone.

"Well as you know this is my day off but it's actually not a day off,  it's a day to volunteer," said Craig Baptiste, SRNS employee.

"Most of this building has been refinished with volunteer labor," said Jeff Westergreen, SRNS employee.

Labor that has come from organizations from all over the CSRA, slowly refinishing the building one level at a time.

"This last 25 percent of the building remains," said Tucciarone.

The building has been in the works since 2007, the executive director says nearly 4,000 volunteer hours have gone into finishing the school and said it's all come from helping hands like the SRNS employees.

Employees got into the nitty gritty of putting up sheet rock and laying hardwood floors, one step closer for the school to be complete.

"This is their day off and they are spending it here," said Tucciarone.

A message the executive director wants her students to learn from as their school transforms before their very eyes.

"Our students hear the work; they see the volunteers and what a great example that is," said Tucciarone. "We want them to grow up and be other centered and taking care of their community as well."

The school is expected to be complete in 2014.
