Gunmakers take exception with governor's comments

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Comments made by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on national television have fired up gunmakers in Connecticut.

The governor said the overall goal of the gun industry is to sell a lot of guns and now, one company is firing back.

In a letter addressed to Malloy, gun manufacturer Mossberg & Sons said his public comments were the exact opposite of what was said privately.

"What this is about is the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible, even if they're deranged, mentally ill, even if they have a criminal background check," Malloy told CNN's Candy Crowley. "They don't care. They want to sell guns."

Mossberg & Sons Senior Vice-President and General Counsel Joseph Bartozzi said he offended enough to write the governor personally.

"Please know that your recent comments have affected the morale of many good, hard-working people," Bartozzi said.

In the letter, Bartozzi questioned "what rational company in what industry would ever promote the criminal misuse of its products?"

"Our company and our employees have gone on record stating the single biggest thing this state can do to stop the criminal misuse of firearms is to prevent access to firearms by prohibited or other at-risk individuals," Bartozzi said.

"The governor thinks about jobs and economic development 24 hours a day. However, on this particular issues, his focus is first and foremost on public safety," the governor's office said in a statement Thursday. "The bill he signed into law will improve public safety and make Connecticut's communities and families safer. We hope the gun industry will join us in that effort."
