Interim police chief named in Harlem

Gary Jones has been named the interim police chief in Harlem. The announcement comes days after David Sward resigned from the position.

Jones is not new to law enforcement. He was the Sardis Police Chief before moving over to the Augusta Youth Development Campus as their interim director.

WFXG is told Jones reported to his first day of work today.

The Harlem Police Department is without a Chief of Police. Assistant Chief, Jim March, tells WFXG, former Police Chief David Sward submitted his letter of resignation today in a weekly staff meeting.

No word on why Sward submitted that letter of resignation and officials say they had no prior knowledge of the resignation.

City officials are working to find an interim but until that interim is named Assistant Chief March will be in charge.
