Heavy rains worsen flooding in parts of Michigan

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM/AP) -

Heavy rains are making flooding worse in parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula and severe thunderstorms are forecast.

The National Weather Service says the Saginaw River at Saginaw is above flood stage and could crest Sunday or Monday.

TV5 Meteorologist Trainee Ted Phaeton says that showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue Thursday morning. This active weather pattern will continue into the afternoon as warm air lifts over the region. High temperatures Thursday will climb into the low 70s.

With the warm and moist airmass in place, we have the potential to see strong to severe storms with the greatest threats being strong winds, lightning, hail and heavy rain. The ground is already very saturated from recent rainfall and we will continue to see heavy rain in the overnight. 1-2" of additional rainfall is possible tonight with locally heavier amounts with thunderstorm activity.

Rivers and streams, which are already running high, will rise significantly through tomorrow morning, especially in low lying and poor drainage areas. It will cool off and turn very windy for Friday with winds gusts in the 40s possible.

Up to 4 inches of rain could fall on parts of the state through Friday. Other flooded rivers include the Grand River, the Kalamazoo River and the Muskegon River. People in the Midland area are watching the rising Tittabawassee River.

The weather service says there's a risk of severe thunderstorms, especially Thursday afternoon and evening. The forecast says storms may be capable of producing widespread damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, hail and isolated tornado activity.

The western Upper Peninsula is expected to get snow and strong winds through Friday.
