"We now have this marker," Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said.
That's now on display in Lister Hill Plaza near the corner of North Perry Street and Madison Avenue in Montgomery.
"That will forever and always will tell the true story and will also be a testament to what we teach today in our basic training," Strange said.
The story that many police and city officials covered up in 1975.
Now the story of Bernard Whitehurst can't be denied any longer as the city tries to make right a terrible wrong when officers shot and killed Whitehurst, thinking he was a robbery suspect.
"Have we grown? Particularly that is our goal when we reflect on the Whitehurst case," Montgomery Police Chief Kevin Murphy said.
"I'm a little more at ease but it still more work that needs to be done as far as making the family whole," Son of Bernard Whitehurst, Stacy Whitehurst said.
"It's not going to bring him back, but I appreciate everything that the mayor and the city council did," Wife of Bernard Whitehurst, Florence Whitehurst said.
The marker was originally slated to be placed at the entrance to the Montgomery Police Academy, but the family didn't want it there.
"I was saying, why would you put it at the police academy and no goes there but people that want to be police officers? So I said you need to put it in a place where it can be seen to the public eye," Stacy Whitehurst said.
The Whitehurst family did indicate they wanted the city to do more than this memorial. They did not elaborate on exactly what they had in mind to pursue, but did tell me there is something in the works.
As part of the 1975 cover-up, Montgomery Police reportedly placed a gun in Whitehurst's hands after he was shot. It eventually led to the resignation of the mayor and others within the police department.
