Boy, 14, charged in juvenile court after shooting girl, 6, in Mission

MISSION, KS (KCTV) -

Police are sorting out why a teenager had a loaded gun and how he shot his 6-year-old family member inside a chiropractor's office.

The day after the incident, the boy was charged in juvenile court with juvenile in possession of a firearm and aggravated batter. He remains in custody.

The shooting was reported about 11 a.m. Tuesday at the 6000 block of Martway Street, which is near the intersection of Martway and Dearborn streets, just two blocks east of Lamar Avenue.

For the receptionist at an accounting firm nearby, the day after Tax Day, April 16, was anything but ordinary.

"I was sitting here, heard the pop and originally thought someone had fallen," Robyn Hayes said.

But then Hayes heard the screams from the chiropractic office across the hall.

"These walls are pretty thin, you can hear a lot. You could tell she was in a lot of pain," Hayes said.

Police said a 14-year-old shot a 6-year-old girl in the leg in the office's waiting room. The girl was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The chiropractor spoke to KCTV5's Justin Schmidt off camera. He said three children came to his office with the girl's mother and the boy was one of them.

"(The shooting was) completely and totally unintentional," Dr. Andrew Bonci said.

Bonci said the boy had the gun in his sweatshirt and was playing with it when it went off. The bullet went right through the little girl's let and left a hole in his wall.

"He should have never had a gun in a public place," Bonci said.

The doctor said he immediately took the gun from the boy, who continuously said "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" in Spanish, and he put the gun in his office until police arrived. Bonci said the clip was empty, but there was a round in the chamber and the gun's serial number was scratched off.

Police are still investigating exactly what led up to the shooting and if it was an accident. The girl was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and the 14-year-old boy ran.

"He looked pretty scared. I think he didn't know what to do. He looked confused," Hayes said.

Police spent an hour and a half looking for the boy. They later said the two kids involved are relatives.

"We set up a perimeter, we had a dog searching, the suspect was seen exiting from the side of one of the businesses, he fit the description perfectly, he was taken into custody and brought down to the station so we could do some interviews," said Capt. David Moloy with the Mission Police Department.

Hayes said after the boy ran, it was chaos, and then she saw the chiropractor.

"He had the gun in his hand above his head and was bringing it to the back room when I was looking out the door," she said.

Mission police questioned the boy for several hours Tuesday afternoon. Police haven't said if they believe the shooting was accidental or if any charges will be filed, but said they will be forwarding the case to the prosecutor's office.

Shawnee Mission School District officials said nearby Rushton Elementary, near 52nd and Horton streets, and Horizons High School, at Johnson and Lamar drives, were on lockdown because of the shooting. The lockdown was lifted about 12:17 p.m.
