2 boys recovering from go-kart wreck with car

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A second grader is home recovering after a frightening wreck on his go-kart Saturday evening in Whites Creek.

The boy said he blacked out after crashing head-on with a car, causing both him and a neighbor riding along to be taken to the hospital.

Jabari Simmons, 8, has scars that show he's been in a serious wreck.

"I feel lucky that I didn't die," said Jabari.

On Monday, the child had staples in his head, one eye is swollen and a banged up leg. An evening of fun on his new go-kart with a neighbor quickly turned frightening.

"I was driving my go-kart up and down the street, and I looked as far down the street as I could go. When I went down the street, no cars were coming," said Jabari.

But Jabari couldn't see that around a parked car a vehicle was heading his direction on Emerald Bay Boulevard.

The child said he tried to hit his brakes but instead pumped the accelerator and slammed head-on into the car.

Jabari and the 7-year-boy riding with him were rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

"Coming off losing my oldest son in October, and then having to get this call about my son being hit by a car, I was really mad and upset all at the same time," said Monroe Simmons, Jabari's father.

Neither boy had life-threatening injuries, but Jabari's friend may have been hurt worse. The 7-year-old boy is still in the hospital and had surgery on Monday.

Jabari is still shaken up by the incident and said he's learned a lesson.

"If I do drive it again, I am going to keep my seatbelt on and wear a helmet," said Jabari.

Before the crash, Jabari had only driven the go-kart a few times, and his father said it's normally under supervision. But after Saturday's wreck, it looks like a decision has been made.

"I'm going to sell his go-kart and he'll probably be sticking to his bike from here on out until he gets older," said Simmons.

Police said both boys were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred.
