Family escapes fire that completely destroys home

Catherine Shaw lives next door to a Chadwick Road house that is now nothing but burnt wood and ash.

"Flames were so high and then they were everywhere. It was like nothing I've ever seen before," Shaw, said.

Because the blaze was so strong she says she cleared everyone out of her house in case the fire spread.

"I was grabbing my grandkids, I was panicking," said Shaw.

Now her panic has turned to sadness as she sees how little the flames left behind.

Aside from the brick walls, all that remains is what used to be the door, a TV frame, insulation that's melted onto hangers and a singed Bible.

From the windows to the bedrooms almost everything is gone. But the fire did not destroy a picture, which neighbors tell Fox54, is of the husband and wife who moved into the house two months ago.

Richmond County fire officials say the family has several young children and they all escaped without injuries.

Neighbors stopped by Friday to see the destruction caused by the fire that officials believe started in the kitchen early Friday morning.

"This is a very bad, bad tragedy, it's real ugly here," said neighbor Keith Hammonds.

Shaw hopes her neighbors will still be here for the family during their time of need.

"I think that this is the time for the community to come together and support them in whatever their need is," said Shaw.

She says she'll be here for them if they ever return so that something good may come from the tragedy.

Fire officials weren't able to say where the family is staying right now; the Red Cross has offered their assistance to the family.
