ASU athletes and sport officials comment on new brand

Posted: Updated:
AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

It's been a year of change for Augusta State Athletics; this is the departments last semester before student athletes wear logos that represent Georgia Regents University Augusta. That reality was all too real for people in the athletic department when the new logo was released Wednesday.

"It's a drastic change," said senior golf player Derek Chang. "I'm always going to have my closet full of the stuff with the 'A' on it so it will definitely be different."

Derek Chang has been on the golf team since his freshmen year and said this is one change that was inevitable.

"At the end of the day, you got to deal with it whether you like it at first or not. It's going to happen so you might as well go with it," said Chang.

"Whenever you change a brand or you create a new brand, you are going to have some people that like it and some people that don't," said Clint Bryant, ASU Athletic Director.

The athletic director said any kind of change will bring mixed feelings in the community.

"When we first adopted the 'A' several years ago, a lot of people didn't like it. They said it was too much like Alabama or Auburn," said Bryant.

Even though the golf team has upheld a notable reputation associated with the ASU logo, the men's golf coach said they feel confident about the future.

"We've got a lot of history here that a lot people are never going to forget about so we can still use that as a recruiting tool on our end," said Kevin McPherson.

Augusta State Athletics will officially transition to the new logo and name on July 1st.  The director said some team jerseys and gear have already been ordered.
