Investigators: Mother made up story of boy being pistol-whipped

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

The Goose Creek Police Department says a 19-year-old woman is behind bars after she made up a story that her 11-month-old boy was pistol-whipped during a robbery earlier this week.

Karsen Ruffin has been arrested and charged with felony filing of a false police report.

Authorities say an investigation into an armed robbery that happened on Monday at the Dollar General store on 205 N. Goose Creek Blvd. revealed that no gun was involved and Ruffin's son was not pistol-whipped.

According to an incident report, the robbery happened in the parking lot of the Dollar General located at 205 North Goose Creek Boulevard around 8 p.m.

An affidavit states that Ruffin told investigators that she and a friend of hers had been the victim of an armed robbery by someone she knew. According to Ruffin, the suspect had taken an Apple iPad, which she was attempting to sell, from her and struck her child in the head twice with a handgun.

Investigators say that Ruffin and her friend had inconsistencies in their stories.

A police report states that the friend said the person who took the iPad did not take out a firearm, never struck the child, and that Ruffin had purposely lied in order to get a quicker response by police.

According to an affidavit, Ruffin confessed on Wednesday that she lied about her child being struck and that the suspect never had a firearm. Ruffin said the incident was a simple theft of her iPad which she had stolen from a client while she was working as an escort.

Officials with the sheriff's office say the investigation is continuing and more arrests are possible.
