Police keep crowd from taking food after grocery store eviction

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Fifteen to twenty members of law enforcement kept a large crowd of people from taking store goods from an Augusta grocery store after an eviction.

Law enforcement officials at the store on Laney Walker Boulevard estimate there were over 200 people waiting to take store merchandise that was put on the ground.

The business owner tells Fox54 they were notified by the landowner, SunTrust Bank in Atlanta, that they would be evicted three days ago because they were in deep debt.

The store owner says they offered their food to a church.

But when the church didn't show up for the food, crowds of people did.

The Marshal's Office says they couldn't give people food because they are required by law to throw the merchandise in the dumpster.

The goods are being disposed of at a landfill.
