Barrow joins aviation hero to kick off STEM tour

Posted: Updated:

Barrington Irving, the youngest person and the first African American pilot to fly solo around the world, will present his inspirational message to students and VIP guests from the Augusta area on Monday, March 25th. U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) will also focus on the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education as he kicks off his STEM Tour of the 12th Congressional District.  Over the last five years, the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc./Barrington Irving "Dream & Soar" program has inspired more than 10,000 students to consider careers in aviation and STEM fields.
"I believe that this event will allow me to get my educational and motivational message out to Augusta students and to introduce them to careers in aviation.  I want to show them that pursuing a career in this exciting industry can enable them to realize their dreams – just as I did," says Mr. Irving.
"Barrington Irving has accomplished so much at a very young age, and students could learn a lot from listening to his story," said Congressman Barrow.  "Georgia is revolutionizing the STEM industry, and I'm excited that students in the 12th District will get an up close look at all they can accomplish by venturing into this field."
This year, Congressman Barrow and Barrington Irving will speak at two events in Augusta, during which students will have an opportunity to hear and speak with Barrington, who will serve as keynote speaker for the session, sponsored by Mitsubishi (MHIA) and supported by US Rep. Barrows.
