LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville mother is facing charges after her children were found home alone and covered in dirt, according to a police report.

"I went over and discovered the kids, and they were in the crib bed," said a neighbor who didn't wish to give his name. He said it was "messy" and "smelly" inside the woman's apartment.

The police report says the mother, Precious Petty, 27, was nowhere to be found.

Officers said Petty left her two-year-old twins unsupervised on Friday and that "both children had soiled diapers, were covered in dirt, and were wearing dirty clothing."

"She's going through a lot right now," said a man who claims he lives with Petty. "It was just a misunderstanding with the kids. She ran to the store and her brother thought she left them here by themselves."

Police said in addition to the two-year-old twins, a five-year-old child arrived home from school all with no adults around.

The roommate said Precious Petty had just stepped out for a few minutes and did nothing wrong.

"It's not right no matter how you look at it," the man said. "I love the kids. They're not my kids, but I love them like they are mine. It was just a big misunderstanding. She's a good mother. It wasn't really that serious, but you know, you do leave and make a mistake and go to the store and come back. It can be taken out of context."

The man said Petty spent a day in jail and has been having a hard time with Friday's developments. "Distraught," was how Petty's roommate described her. "We go to court tomorrow, so hopefully we get everything taken care of and see what the judge says about the whole situation."

The three children were taken to the Home of the Innocence.

Petty faces charges of abandonment of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor.
