Local church celebrates 25 years and anticipates controversial court cases

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

It was not just any Sunday at the Metropolitan Community Church of Our Redeemer. Despite the fact that members were carrying their palms for Palm Sunday, they celebrated their 25th anniversary in the CSRA.

"Today was an amazing celebration of 25 years of inclusive ministries," said Rev. Lisa Heilig, interim pastor.

The church welcomed guest speaker, Rev. Dr.  Nancy Wilson, the Moderator and global leader of Metropolitan Community Churches.  Wilson was appointed by President Obama in 2011 to serve on the White House Council on Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

"You know it's still news that there could be a church that could accept everybody," said Rev. Dr. Wilson.

More than 100 members said they feel at home in the church that sits in the heart of downtown Augusta. Many told FOX54 that while Sunday was about celebrating 25 years, the week to come is about equality and their eyes are focused on Washington.

"I hope that the Supreme Court will understand that Civil Rights are for all people," said Rev. Heilig.

This week, the Supreme Court will hear cases that impact same-sex marriage nationwide.

"Whatever the Supreme Court decides, we know we will win this battle," said Rev. Dr. Wilson.

"It is a week of hope of looking forward," said Rev. Heilig. "It is a week of hopefulness for what the Supreme Court may say and as Christians we then walk through Holy Week and we know that is Easter is coming."

The cases will be heard at the Supreme Court on Tuesday and Wednesday.
