A Falmouth woman was sentenced on Friday for Social Security fraud after convincing her son to lie for her and even dressing in costume to fool SSA agents.
say Regina Kay Vanlandingham, 51, didn't disclose her true living
arrangement and financial resources to the Social Security
Administration. It happened numerous times from 1999 through 2011.
records indicate Vanlandingham told Social Security she was living
alone and not receiving financial support from anyone, when in fact, she
was receiving financial assistance from three separate men at different
In addition, she dressed in a costume and pretended to
be severely mentally disabled in front of Social Security agents in an
attempt to remain eligible for assistance, according to authorities.
When agents became suspicious, she had her son, Franklin Vanlandingham, 30,
lie to help her conceal her fraud.
In total, Vanlandingham received $191,931.97 from state and federal assistance programs as a result of her scheme.
She was convicted of Supplemental Security Income Fraud and sentenced to 12 months in federal prison. Her son received five months in prison, followed by five months home detention, for aiding and abetting Supplemental Security Income Fraud.
