WARREN, MI (WJBK/FOX) – A lawmaker is introducing legislation that would prohibit minors from using tanning booths.

Michigan is currently one of 36 states that place restrictions on indoor tanning use by minors, such as requiring parental consent.

Only two states currently ban indoor tanning for minors – California and Vermont.

Dermatologists say indoor tanning raises the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

"They're no good; they're bad for you," said dermatologist Dr. Steven Grekin. "Whenever you go in a tanning bed, you're damaging your skin. This causes melanoma in the skin. It's proven."

Grekin's predicted tanning beds would eventually be outlawed for all people.
