Local ROTC named best in the nation

Georgia Regents University ROTC program named number one in the nation for their training program.

GRU cadets beat more than more than 200 other schools in the the U.S. on leadership development and assessment courses including physical fitness, land navigation, tactical abilities and peer evaluations.

"When you lump all those together, 70 percent of our cadets received an overall rating of excellence which is the highest you can get," said Lt. Col. Keith Cantrell, Military Science Department Chair.

"It means a lot, we worked hard," said Cadet Jonathan Luke. "We put in a lot of long hours so it's nice to see that we could leave something behind for the program."

A program that has never received this type of recognition; last year they were ranked in the nation's top 30.

However, having Fort Gordon nearby has played a major role in climbing the ranks.

"There is no way we could accomplish our training expectations without the support of Fort Gordon," said Lt. Col. Cantrell.

Lt. Col. Cantrell said Fort Gordon's location and accessibility gives the cadets military base experience, allowing them to train in their facilities and ranges.

"The support that they do give us is beneficial and probably gives an advantage over the schools who aren't in that situation," said Luke.

An advantage that helped to bring them to the top this year and an incentive to maintain the number one ranking for many years to come.
