Editorial: The scandal in Steubenville

(WOIO) -

This week, two football players from Steubenville, Ohio were found guilty in juvenile court for raping another classmate while she was drunk. Both broke down in court and apologized for their actions. But two young men are going to juvenile prison, and this story is far from over. While the rape was a violent crime, just as offensive is the apparent months-long cover-up.

Testimony from the trial suggests that many students and parents knew of the rape including the high school football coach.  And speaking of parents…the rape occurred during a night of teen drinking that bounced from house-to-house-to-house. Where were the parents?

State Attorney General Mike Dewine is launching his own investigation to see who else saw that rape, hid the crime or obstructed in the investigation.

While some in the community would love to just forget the incident ever happened, we applaud Dewine's courage to get to the full truth.

Write and let me know what you think.  I'm Bill Applegate and here's the address.
