Family turns to billboard for cold case answers

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Andy Valdez was found in his van robbed and murdered in January 1996 at Whaley Park in Flint.

After 17 years, the murder remains unsolved. Now his family is renting a billboard to call attention to the cold case.

Bea Ellis is hoping the billboard will either jar someone's memory of that night 17 years ago or lead to the killer or killers of her brother.

"There's a killer out there, still walking the streets." said Ellis, sister of Andy Valdez. "The way he died was bad enough and then just leave him alone and dump his dead body, it just goes to show you how cold-hearted somebody had to be."

Police say they believe Valdez was robbed and then shot several times.

Two kids riding their bikes in Whaley Park found his body in his van parked at the park back on Jan. 28, 1996.

Valdez's family paid to have the billboard put up and they say that cost is nothing compared to the value of the information that might be generated by it.

"I feel that the kids, his kids have the right to know what happened to their dad," said Ellis.

She's pleading for anyone who might remember anything of that night so long ago to come forward.

She also says if somebody remembers something they need to tell the police or make a call to Crime Stoppers so they can work the leads.

Ellis fears that even if a person or persons are caught and charged with this crime, she feels they will never know what really happened that night.
