Springfield K-9 officer assists in arrest after 2 home invasions Monday morning

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Roberto Hill Jr., 21, was arrested Monday morning after allegedly breaking into two separate homes in Springfield.

Springfield police said Officer Scott Stelzer and his K-9 partner, Blek, were sent to Garfield Street after a resident called and said someone had kicked open his screen and tried forcing his way into the rear door. The resident told officers he scared him away.

After searching for the suspect unsuccessfully, Stelzer and Blek waited and watched in the car.  They then spotted Hill running down the street and Blek chased him on foot.

According to police, Stelzer and Blek cornered Hill at a fence. Police said Hill then turned towards Stelzer and attacked him with his fists and possibly a knife. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Stelzer said Hill's hands were covered in blood along with the knife he was holding.

Police said shortly after the arrest, a 911 call came in from a second home on Garfield Street alerting the police of a home invasion. The officers responded and discovered an 84-year-old male victim suffering from a stab wound. Police said it was caused by Hill, who had just broken the couple's home. The victim's wife told police once in the home, the suspect stabbed her husband, taking all of their money and other items.

The victim of the second home was transported to the hospital by ambulance and is said to be in good condition.

Hill is being held on multiple charges, including assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
