LINCOLN COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

Lincoln County investigators searched for answers to 75-year-old Hamp Turner's death along Highway 220 Friday night.

Investigators stopped cars at a checkpoint near Turner's house and asked drivers  if they saw any parked vehicles or someone walking on the side of the road on December 7.

Officers say receiving that information can make the difference between Turner's death becoming a cold case or a solved case.

"Someone went in on him and brutally beat him; beat him to the point that he died," said Lincoln County investigator Jim Wallen.

Sheriff Bruce Beggs says he believes someone beat and stabbed Turner to death for his money.

"He was someone the community knew and loved. He never hurt anybody and helped somebody; just a real nice gentleman," Begg, said.

Tom McWhorter was stopped by the checkpoint; he says Turner worked for his brother.

"He worked for him at one time and he did some odd jobs for us, weed eating and miscellaneous," said McWorter.

He hopes the road block will turn up information about the person responsible for Turner's death.

"Somebody is walking around and knows what happened, so maybe it will," he said.

Beggs asks anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Office at (706) 359 4118.
