Lumberjack competition swings into Auburn this weekend

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

If the beautiful weather is calling you to get outside and do something fun and different with your family this weekend, we have just the event for you: it's lumberjack time!

STIHL Timbersports is bringing its collegiate southern qualifier and professional series qualifying event to Auburn Friday March 15 and Saturday March 16.

If you have ever wanted to see real lumberjack in action, here is your chance...

Auburn University is hosting the 56th Annual Southern Forestry Conclave with students from fourteen universities competing in outdoor challenges like knife throwing, ax throwing and timber cutting.

Both men and women, known as lumber Jills, are competing Friday afternoon and again Saturday.

Friday starting at 6 p.m., STIHL is sponsoring the company's Timbersports competition with the best college students and professional lumberjacks competing in a variety of events including the log roll, pole climb, chain saw throwing and archery.

"What can they expect to see? Well a lot of people say oh, isn't that the lumberjack show that we saw on ESPN," said Roger Phelps with STIHL. "Guess what, it is the lumberjack show you saw on ESPN, basically all different competing in their disciplines."

The professionals begin competition Friday at 6 p.m. at the cowboy covered arena at on U.S. Highway 280. Admission is $5.

Collegiate and professional competitors will alternate during each event.

Forestry students from all over the southeast are camping out on the Auburn University campus for the two-day event.

The competitions will air on the Outdoor Channel beginning April 5.
