AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
The Augusta Municipal Golf Course could soon be partnered with its neighbor, the First Tee of Augusta, a move enthusiastically supported by commissioners today.
Paul Simon, head of Augusta Riverfront LLC, is on the board of directors at First Tee. He's the one proposing the marriage.
"It reduces our cost to operate," said Simon. "We can spread some of our costs to the city, they can spread some of theirs to us. So you're reducing your overhead cost."
Despite Simon and commissioners sparring over issues in the past, such as the construction of a proposed Tee Center parking deck skybridge, the two sides did find common ground today.
"I believe it's a great idea," said Commissioner Alvin Mason. "I believe it's one of the better ideas we have heard as it related to this agenda item, and the course known as The patch."
The move could also see some of golf's youngest players move to The Patch. As grade schoolers graduate from the First Tee School Golf Program, they could start to play the 18-hole municipal course. But even these youngsters want some work done on the course.
"There are some little bare patches on the green that need to be removed so it's easier to putt on," said Xavien Newman.
The new proposal would do just that, and bring dignity back to what commissioners consider to be a great asset for the city.
