Even though the official start of spring is still two weeks away, some police officials say they see a cyclical boost in crime numbers when the weather warms up.
"It seems like they came in and kicked the door in right around here," said Richard Hart of Clarksville, looking at the splintered frame around his kitchen door.
At Hart's Oak Arbor Court home, a boot print is still on the door.
"I'm retired," said Hart. "I'm living on disability. I don't have that much money to live on. I live paycheck to paycheck, and it's a shame this stuff happens."
Hart said while on vacation this week, someone knocked and then kicked in his dead-bolted back door.
"My TV sets were stolen, my roommate's pills, and some jewelry," said Hart. "It was quite disappointing. My roommate, she was quite upset. She was in tears. It felt like we were violated."
Hart is far from alone. Just this week, Clarksville police said there have been 14 burglaries in the St. Bethlehem area including Cherrybark Lane, White Face Drive and McCormack Drive. Among the 14 burglaries is Hart, though police said the crooks mostly hit homes of soldiers as they left for physical training in the early morning hours. The crooks usually kicked in back doors and stole electronics.
"I talked to my neighbor last night about it," said Hart. "She's worried about her children. We've just got to start looking out for each other a little more carefully."
Officer Jim Knoll of the Clarksville Police Department said getting to know neighbors is what you should do to stop crooks from doing any spring cleaning in your home. Knoll also advised to install an alarm system and go to extra lengths to secure doors.
"What they can do is get long screws and make sure that it actually goes into the heavy wood," said Knoll.
In addition to those 14 residential burglaries, Clarksville police said they've also seen four motorcycle thefts in the past week. Police recommend to always use heavy duty chains to secure your motorcycle, lock it through the body of the bike instead of the tires and park it in well-lit areas.
