Second suspect in CCU shooting taken into custody in Ohio

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Stephon Mclain Junior, 22, was charged with the murder of Coastal Carolina University student Anthony Liddell at his arraignment on Friday.

Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson charged Mclain with the murder but the magistrate judge that Mclain Junior stood in front of does not have authority to grant bond in murder cases, so he won't be getting out any time soon.

Police apprehended a Mclain Junior in Mansfield, Ohio on Wednesday in connection with the shooting of the CCU student that occurred February 26 at an off-campus housing complex. The Mansfield Police Department said they were responding to a report of a fight, according to the arresting officer. Apparently Mclain Junior was acting funny, smelled of marijuana and started to pull away when the officer approached him.

Mclain Junior was put into handcuffs, and when the officer searched his name in a national crime database, he discovered the warrant for his arrest in Horry County.

Marquis McDonald was also arrested and charged last week for the same shooting of 19-year-old CCU sophomore Anthony Darnell Liddell. It could be as early as April when Mclain and McDonald face a circuit court judge for each of their bond hearings. For now they have taken residency at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, said officials.

According to the narrative information on Mclain Junior's arrest warrant, McDonald arranged to meet with Liddell at a predetermined location, and evidence reveals that McDonald and Mclain Junior fired a 40-caliber handgun, striking the Liddell 3 times, resulting in his death, the warrant stated.

According to the warrant, historical data reveals that McDonald and Mclain Junior were together directly before and after the shooting.  McDonald admitted to police that he was present during the shooting and stated that "Black" did the shooting, the warrant stated.

A police official stated that witness interviews and cell data collected indicate Mclain Junior is known as "O-Black" and "Ohio," and the number listed for "O-Blake" in recorded cell data used by McDonald was registered to Mclain Junior.

CCU President David A. DeCenzo released the following statement regarding the arrest of a second suspect in custody:

"We are relieved and hopeful this new development will help law enforcement personnel bring a sense of closure to this tragic event. We are grateful to all the law enforcement agencies working so diligently on the case."
