PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A winter storm has dropped heavy snow across Arizona's high country and pummeled the desert areas with rain.

Small hail was reported in the Ahwatukee area Friday afternoon and SRP reports they have 8,000 customers without power due to the heavy rain and high winds. [Click here for SRP power outage map.]

APS reports just 187 customers without power in Tempe, Sun City, Lake Pleasant and Yarnell.

Forest Lakes, northwest of Payson, reported 20 inches of snow as of Friday evening. Flagstaff had between six and 10 inches of snow, prompting City Hall and Northern Arizona University to shut down early.

Snow started falling Friday morning and is forecast to continue through Saturday but with less precipitation.

The National Weather Service says rainfall measured at Sky Harbor International Airport broke a record for the date with more than two-thirds of an inch. The thunderstorms had largely moved out of the area by Friday evening.

Residents of southern Arizona were seeing a mix of rain and snow.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says motorists should avoid travel if possible or be prepared for slick roads and limited visibility.
