AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
The Augusta Housing Authority and Community Development Department
came together today to announce a revamp of the Twiggs Circle
subdivision.
Mayor Deke Copenhaver is excited about
turning what some now consider a blight into an eclectic mix of
homes, retail, and neighborhood parks.
"It's something this area of the city really needs, a very quality product, so we're very excited about it," said Copenhaver.
Richard
Fletcher is the man expected to spearhead the project. He's the same
man who built the highly successful Hammonds Ferry project in North
Augusta. He's ready to bring that success across the Savannah River.
"You're just blocks away from downtown," explained Fletcher. "If you work downtown, it's convenient. You could walk to work, or bicycle to work."
It's
the latest development in the Laney Walker-Bethlehem neighborhoods,
expected to respect the rich heritage of the communities.
"We've
had a proven track record, Heritage Pines in Laney Walker Bethlehem, of
investing in areas of the city that have seen disinvestment for years," said Copenhaver.
"It's the right thing to do."
The hope now is that the
proven track record will now carry over to Twiggs Circle, and bring new
life to a once flourishing neighborhood.
